3 Refreshing New Travel and Tourism Industry Trends

What is the unifying theme behind many of the latest travel & tourism industry trends? They are meant to refresh weary travellers.

Whereas travel & tourism used to be primarily focused on escape and entertainment, today’s tourism management teams are always on the lookout for ways to keep tired travellers feeling balanced, happy and healthy. The reputation of an airport or ski lodge can no longer stand on the quality of its cocktails alone.

A recent reading of the travel & tourism section in the Montreal Gazette newspaper reveals three emerging trends in tourism management: airport yoga, frequent flyer spa treatments and back-to-the-basics environmentally friendly ski vacations.

1. Yoga Rooms in Airports

San Francisco International Airport is the first airport in the world to offer a yoga room for the benefit of passengers on long layovers. Can we expect to see the symbol for the room – a drawing of a stick person in seated meditation pose – in future textbooks for tourism schools?

Yoga rooms in airports are an example of the travel & tourism industry responding to travellers’ changing priorities. As interest in a healthy, active lifestyle continues to grow, we can expect tourism management teams to seek more ways to help their customers find balance, even while on a long trip.

2. Is That a Spa or an Airport Lounge?

Some airport lounges are now offering first-class passengers the option of taking a shower or napping in a dedicated sleep room. With the new Senator Lounge in Frankfurt International Airport, the tourism management teams for the local airline Lufthansa have found a unique way to refresh first-class passengers: the Lounge offers the possibility of spa treatments, which can be paid for with frequent flyer points.

Increasingly, tourism management teams will need to think beyond traditional travel & tourism offerings (e.g., cocktails, meals) to incorporate new services not previously covered in tourism schools, such as:

* facial treatments (for men and women alike)
* massages

With its Senator Lounge, the Lufthansa tourism management team is showing its willingness to adapt to the changing demands of the travel & tourism markets. More and more, adaptability may be the key message conveyed in tourism schools.

3. Eco-lodges

Forget about multi-course meals in a gourmet restaurant! The latest travel & tourism trends speak to simpler tastes.

Today’s eco-ski lodges boast such features as:

* composting toilets
* biodegradable soap
* brown bag lunches made with local, organic food
* solar power
* wood-pellet heating

Industry teams of the future, take note. Schools must focus on teaching students how to adapt to the changing demands of the travel & tourism industry as per these three recent examples.

The Cheapest Way to Travel the World, Land or Sea

The cheapest way to travel the world is through escorted tours, which can save you up to 40% off the price, then if you go it alone.

Why?

1. Tour Operators negotiate a low group rate based on the past, present and future bookings with hotels, airlines, sightseeing, meals and even shopping. They can then pass the savings on to a group.

2. It is safer when you travel in a group, especially when traveling overseas. Safety is fast becoming a concern however it’s not stopping travelers from booking Israel, Holy Land, Istanbul or even Egypt for that matter. And tours and travel to Mexico is still happening across the board. (Mexico is beautiful)

3. Escorted Tours help you to have a worry free vacation, because most of the thinking is done for you. The tour company lays out an itinerary and you either join in, or not. However, if the group is not returning to that same destination, that evening, you may want to join in.

4. Cruises are a form of escorted tour travel and the prices reflect this hidden secret. Just think about it, you get on the ship, usually at the same location and you cruise as a group to multiply cities, only unpacking once. All your meals and onboard entertainment are included.

You can select your onshore excursions based on your interest and cash flow (some excursions can be a little pricy) However, for the most part, everyone on the ship is going to the same destinations that you are. And the price reflects this one basic fact.

Individuality can be practiced in where you spend your time aboard ship or on you land based escorted tour. The land based tours always have free time, where group members can opt out of a city tour, and explore on their own.

The really good thing about land based tours is, if you don’t return back to the hotel at a certain time, you will have a whole group of people looking for you. The rule of travel is, try to spend your free time, with one or two members within your tour group, who have the same interest as you.

For example, when I went to Egypt, I went with a group, and when it came time to visit the casino in Cairo, Egypt, you couldn’t get in without a male escort. Well, there were more than just me who was traveling alone, and each of us, just tagged alone with the married couple whom we felt comfortable with.

5. Regardless if you are traveling alone or with your spouse or a friend, escorted tours are safer and cheaper. Now if you really want to save big bucks then find a group cruise tour. This type of tour is usually put together by, an experienced travel agent, who understands that he/she makes a lot more in commissions if they book a group. (with half the work)

This type of group tour is not always easy to find

5 Family Weekend Break Ideas For Spring

Spring is here, the weather is getting warmer and it’s starting to feel like the perfect time for a weekend family getaway after a drab winter of work and school.

Here are five suggestions for your family this spring.

Tourist in your own city

If you already live in a large centre, what about exploring your own city? Take the children on the local transportation to nearby sights, such as an ethnic area of town for an “exotic meal” or to spend the day at a museum or art gallery that you haven’t been to. For that extra feeling of a trip away, rent a hotel for the weekend on the other side of the city. You may be quite surprised at what interesting things you can find in your own city when you approach it from a different angle.

Out of town visit to a farm or nearby small towns

Book an out of town stay at a rural hotel or campground and visit some nearby farms. Many of them have weekend activities for a small fee, such as hay wagon rides, horseback riding, petting zoos and hay or corn mazes. There may be a fun spring festival to join in the local town or a farmers market to explore. Check tourism websites for activities in the area you plan to visit.

Hike in the wilderness

Book a small trip away for the weekend near a natural park or reserve. Pack a picnic and take a hike through the wilderness. Have the children look for local birds and snap pictures. Don’t forget the binoculars. There may be castles or old estates that can be explored as well. Many local historic properties are free or charge a nominal fee to enter.

Indoor amusement park

There are quite a few indoor amusement parks that are fun for the whole family and can keep the children busy for the day, not to mention wear them out! Riding the roller coaster, playing games or go-kart riding is a fun way to spend the weekend. Munching on hot dogs and candy floss will make the family think it’s summer time in the spring. Check online for nearby amusement parks.

Leisure Resort

Consider trying family weekend breaks at a leisure resort. Often there will be a “kids team” that will keep the little ones amused while the adults pursue their own fun activities such as swimming in the pool, hiking, golf, tennis or relaxing at the spa. There will be plenty of indoor activities such as table tennis, ball games and board games for children as well as outdoor fun and games if the weather allows. Check online for offered leisure resort packages.

Travelling Teddy Bears

Have you ever seen a furry teddy sitting on a plinth in Trafalgar square? Or perhaps a small teddy bear posing for a photo in front of the rocks at stone Henge? Or even some small paw prints in the snow near the Mermaid in Copenhagen? If so, chances are you have seen a travelling bear!

Travelling bears are small teddy bears who travel the world in search of adventure and famous landmarks. They usually travel with a human friend who places them in front of well known monumnents and takes photos which can then be uploaded to facebook, a blog or the bear’s own website.

Not every bear is cut out for this life – they need to be very brave little bears and should also be small enough to comfortably fit in a bag. They should easily be washed too as the travelling life can be dusty.

There are a number of themes in this category, including educational travelling bears who belong to classrooms and travelling bears who are sent from person to person so they can experience as much of the world as possible.

In fact you have probably already unknowingly heard of a travelling bear. Paddington bear is a very famous example as he arrived in London all the way from Peru (having travelled on a ship to get there) and sat in a busy London station with only a suitcase and some Wellington boots with a note around his neck asking anyone who found him to look after him. He was picked up by a family and his adventures after this are legendary. This is exactly the kind of spirit that is needed for a particular Teddy to become a successful travelling bear. Other famous travelling bears could be argued to be Rupert the Bear, who, although does not travel the world much, does travel into magical lands and has amazing adventures that are documented in many comic books and even a TV series.

Bear Grylls does not count. Although he does indeed travel the world and in fact goes to places that many other bears would find it hard to survive, in spite of his misleading name he is not really a bear at all but is in fact a man who has taken a bear name. So although yes, he is a bear who travels he is not a travelling teddy bear and fails to make the cut.

In general it has been a weird type of winter here in the Rocky Mountains, at least at the beginning of the season. We are used to getting snow in the mountains sometimes as early as October but this year it was almost until the beginning of the year that occurred.

For those of us that like to practice winter sports it felt like a really long wait. Tourism in the city of Denver depends a lot on sky resorts. This year it was a slow start with snow accumulation however the last several weeks Mother Nature has been very pleasing in that matter.

That is a synonym of good news if you are planning on traveling to the Mile High City and enjoy what is left of this winter season. However, in case you don’t have wintry activities on mind, Denver and the entire Front Range have lots of different activities for you and your kids to enjoy.

Most of them are paid attractions but they are all worth the visit. So let’s find out what to do in Denver with kids.

Museumof Natureand Science.- Probably one of main attractions you must see when you visit the city. It features several exhibitions that can go from dinosaurs to ancient cultures, space, biology and more. It also has an IMAX Theatre were you will enjoy very interesting movies or documentaries in the state of the art screen.

Zoo.- Not too far away from the Nature and Science Museum, actually in the same park (city park), you’ll find one of the most visited paid attractions in Denver. The 80 acre location features hundreds of animal species from all over the world all year long. The Primate Panorama and the Predator Ridge sections are among people’s favorites.

Elitch Gardens.- This amusement park used to be part of the Six Flags Corporation but a few years ago the park became independent. Exciting roller coasters, thrilling rides for all ages and a water park adjacent to it make “Elitches” another top attraction in the city especially if you are traveling with kids.

Children’s Museum.- With so many interactive exhibits for children of all ages this place will definitely keep your youngsters busy and having fun for a good part of the day. There is a lot for them to discover, explore and learn at this place. If you and your younglings wear pajamas on your visit you will receive a discount on your admission.

Aquarium.- Just a few yards away from the Children’s Museum you will find the Downtown Aquarium. This place not only serves as home for thousands of marine species both salt and freshwater but it also features a restaurant inside the facility. You can enjoy of a meal while you and your kids look at the fish and many other species through the water tanks all from your dinning table.

Art Museum.- At this magnificent place, you will find hundreds of galleries that showcase collections from around the world. You will easily spend your entire morning touring the entire place. Check out their website for details on free tickets on the first Saturday of every month.

Air and Space Museum.- The Wings Over the Rockies Museum has on display a permanent collection of actual aircraft associated to the people that serviced the Lowry Air Force Base in the past. With several planes on exhibit and lots of history in the hangar your kids will be really delighted.

Tiny Town.- This miniature village is actually located in a town west of Denver called Morrison. There your kids will have fun riding the train along the railroad course. They can will also enjoy looking at the scale sized buildings that mimic a real village.

Ski resorts.- Like I mentioned at the beginning, this is one of the main attractions during winter time for both locals and tourists. Activities, like snowboarding, skiing, sledding, ice skating, snow tubing and ski bikes are among kid’s favorites. The two closest resorts where you can do all these activities without leaving the resort are Keystone and Breckenridge.

If you visit the city during summertime you can also take full advantage of the outdoors by making use of the thousands of biking, walking and hiking trails. You should also visit some the most popular landmarks in the city and take pictures with your family. Among tourist’s favorites are the State Capitol Building, the Denver City and County Building at Civic Center Park.

If you still have time left with your trip and you enjoy shopping, then Denver has several of excellent options to choose from. Malls like Park Meadows, Flat Iron Crossing, Cherry Creek and the 16th Street Mall are among people’s favorites.

There are many hobbies which may seem enjoyable, but once you start doing them regularly, you quickly learn how expensive those hobbies can be. In fact, any hobby can put a drain on your bank account, particularly if you do not show any restraint when it comes to enjoying it. There are some, however, that tend to lend themselves more to quite a bit of spending than others. Here are a few expensive hobbies that although they can be quite enjoyable are certainly going to put the squeeze on your budget if you are not careful with how much you are spending.

One of the more expensive hobbies that you may find yourself interested in is collecting model trains. It is not necessarily that it is going to be expensive in and of itself, but the problem is that many people that collect model trains really shown no restraint when it comes to purchasing those items. In fact, you may find that you are not only spending money on the products themselves, you are spending money to travel to areas in which those products can be purchased. Of course, you can always enjoy your hobby by picking up a few pieces here and there on eBay or perhaps finding some in your local area, but more than likely, you will find that you are spending more and more on this hobby as it progresses.

Golf is also a past time that, although it is not the most expensive hobby that it is out there, it can be quite expensive when you end up really getting into it. The expense not only is seen in the purchase of rounds of golf, it is seen in the expense of the equipment and all of the training that goes into it. As you continue to learn more about golf, you will find that your enjoyment of the sport often hinges on your ability to play better. That would mean a better set of golf clubs, more expensive golf balls, and paying for training and equipment, as well as for personal training.

If you really want to talk about an expensive hobby, we are going to discuss flying. Flying is something that many people find to be very enjoyable, so it certainly can be a recreational pastime. The problem is that it is not simply enough for most people to fly on occasion, they need to own an aircraft and all of the expense that goes along with it. There are some ways for you to overcome this problem, however, such as through fractional aircraft ownership or perhaps airplane rental services. These are things that must be looked into in advance, as you would want to consider the advantages and disadvantages of flying with partial ownership or renting an airplane.

Although we have only touched on a few of the more expensive hobbies, they really can put a drain on the wallet if you are not careful. Of course, any hobby can be expensive if it is not enjoyed with moderation. Keep that in mind, and you will be able to enjoy a pastime without sinking all of your money into it.
